Barcelona Cathedral (La Seu)

Barcelona Cathedral (also known as La Seu) is also known as the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia and dates back to the 14th century.

It's located in Barcelona Gothic Quarter which is in the Ciutat Vella (old city).

The Cathedral was cleaned and restored in the late 60s early 70s and is once again shrowded in scaffolding (as can be seen from the above photo), however, you can still go inside.

The stunning Carrer del Bisbe (Bishop Street - built around 10 BC) surrounds the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia.

Worth a visit is the lovely 14th century cloister full of lush flowers, orange and palm trees, a pond, fountain and resident thirteen white geese who represent the age of Santa Eulalia.

The cloisters enclose the Well of the Geese (Fuente de las Ocas) and was completed around 1450.

Santa Eulalia

Eulàlia was from an upper-class Barcelona family from the district of Sarrià. The third century was a time of persecution and for not renouncing her Christian faith, she was tortured, burned and crucified in the square by the Roman Emperor Diocleciano.

Santa Eulàlia was a young 13 year old virgin and according to tradition, suffered martyrdom at the hands of the Romans. She was stripped naked, placed inside a barrel with knives sticking out inside and then rolled down the street now called Baixada de Santa Eulalia
