Parc Guell - Antoni Gaudi - Park Guell

Parc Guell Parc Guell

Parc Guell Hansel and Gretel House

Who else could create the stunning Parc Guell but the modernist architect Antoni Gaudi!

Count Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudi to create a housing development of 60 houses for the affluent Barcelona middle classes.

The project was based on the English style of country houses popular at the time. This is why the word park is spelt in English and not Catalan.

Parc Guell Entrance

On entering the park you'll see the iconic double staircase which takes you past the much loved lizard to a room designed by Gaudi to be the central market place.

This is one of the most breathtaking of his works full of Doric Pillars leaning inward.

Parc Guell TerraceOn top is a large terrace surrounded by a mosaic bench where you can enjoy the most amazing views of Barcelona.

As a child Gaudi loved nature and most of his works include forms of animals, birds and other creatures which must have inspired him when designing the park.

Gaudi MuseumTo the Count's dismay, the project never took off and for some time Gaudi lived in one of the houses which is now the Museu Gaudi.

The location is lovely with woodland walks which in Gaudi's time were intended as the playground of the rich. Today this lovely park is the modernist playground for all of Barcelona to enjoy.
